Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., president of St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY), was recently recognized as a 2025 Long Island Press Power List Icon Honoree. Presented by Schneps Media, the honor recognizes the most influential individuals for their commitment, impact and influence on the Long Island region.
“I am grateful to once again be recognized and share this honor with leaders who represent many communities throughout New York,” said Dr. Boomgaarden. “I congratulate my fellow honorees and look forward to our continued good work in preparing future leaders.”
President Boomgaarden was also named to the Manhattan Power List earlier this year, and while he has been honored several times in both New York City and Long Island, this is his first time being recognized as an icon.
As the eighth president of St. Joseph’s University, New York, Dr. Boomgaarden’s commitment to the SJNY community has taken shape through his various initiatives such as the addition of new academic programs and the development and redevelopment of facilities across the University’s campuses in Brooklyn and on Long Island.
In recent years, Dr. Boomgaarden oversaw the construction of the Long Island Campus’ multi-million-dollar student center, which opened its doors in fall 2023.
Adding to his list of accolades, President Boomgaarden was also recently named to 2025 City & State Power 100 list, which spotlights the actions and accomplishments of educators, political figures, business executives, advocates and other community leaders for their contributions to the Brooklyn community.
With a lifelong career in education, Dr. Boomgaarden sits on several boards and committees across Long Island. Prior to his time at St. Joseph’s, he has held teaching positions at Eastman School of Music, Ithaca College Conservatory of Music, St. Mary’s College in Maryland, the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Salzburg, Loyola University Maryland and Loyola University New Orleans.
