Carrying big blue storage bags and pushing rolling carts filled with bedding and more, new resident students ready for their first semester at St. Joseph’s University, New York’s Brooklyn Campus moved into the St. George Residence, SJNY’s housing located in Brooklyn Heights on Aug. 29.
More than 100 students moved in during the weekend just before classes began, according to Ryan Sinclair, coordinator of residential life at SJNY’s Brooklyn Campus.
“Move-in was a smooth and exciting process, and it was wonderful to see the energy of our students and families as they settled into the residence hall. We are thrilled to welcome everyone back,” she said.
This semester, students calling the 30-story building home hail from places near and far — from Brooklyn and Long Island, NY to California and U.S. cities in between, as well as Madagascar, Italy, Australia, France and Jamaica.
SJNY occupies two floors at the St. George Residence; the rooms are fully furnished double-occupancy spaces, with typical dorm-style beds, dressers, desks, closets/wardrobes, a refrigerator, a microwave and a full bathroom.
SJNY staff helped kick off the semester for residents with an RA-led program, “Root Beer Float Your Way Through the Semester,” during which students learned how to access valuable campus resources as they enjoyed root beer floats.
“Programs like these are a great way for students to connect, build community and start the year on a positive note,” Sinclair shared.
An added perk to living in the St. George is that a diverse mix of students from other New York City area colleges and universities also live in the building — not only do they get to live with fellow SJNY students, but they also have an expanded community of peers in this unique living arrangement.
The University offers a free shuttle that runs throughout the day between the St. George and the SJNY campus in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
