Saturday, Sept. 27 saw dozens of former St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) Golden Eagles reunite at the University’s outdoor field complex for the 2025 Golden Eagle Spirit Fest. This annual event is an opportunity for SJNY alumni athletes of all ages to reconnect with their collegiate roots, lace up their cleats, compete in exhibition games, and enjoy a tailgate barbecue with friends, family and SJNY staff.

Baseball players wore “24” in memory of Gregg Alfano ’93.
In the morning, the men’s and women’s alumni soccer teams faced off against one another in a friendly match before the current SJNY Golden Eagles men’s and women’s teams took to the pitch to play Old Westbury in the afternoon. On the softball field, the alumnae game took place as players across various classes bonded over their shared love of the game. Across the complex, the baseball field was primed for the 9th annual Gregg Alfano Memorial Alumni Baseball Game. Every player on the field wore number 24 in honor of the late 1993 graduate and Golden Eagles Hall of Fame member. SJNY also honored the 2001 Long Island Campus baseball team at Spirit Fest.
Alumni Bonds Go Beyond Grad Years
For baseball alumni Charlie Caputo ’90 and Brian Kendrick ’95, Golden Eagle Spirit Fest is a special opportunity to reconnect and reflect. “It feels like being back at home,” said Kendrick. “Playing for St. Joe’s was a great experience. I remember winning the championship back in ’94, which was a very big deal, and seeing these guys play 31 years later just brings you back. It really makes you feel young again.”

Caputo, who was on the Golden Eagles baseball team during its first season, has enjoyed watching the program evolve. “I love seeing where the program is today, from the numbers they put up to the players they recruit,” Caputo stated. Caputo and Kendrick both credit alumni events like Spirit Fest for bringing them together as friends, even though they were never teammates. “Charlie and I never knew each in the ‘90s, but we’re good friends because of the alumni programs and games almost 30 years later. That’s St. Joe’s right there. That’s what it’s all about,” Kendrick shared. Golden Eagle Spirit Fest is just one of the many alumni events hosted this year by the University.
