Veronica Kaninska, M.S.Ed., CTRS, senior teaching professor of recreation and leisure studies and hospitality and tourism management at St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY), was named to this year’s Schneps Media Brooklyn Power List.
Recognizing the most influential individuals in the region for their commitment, impact and influence in the community, Kaninska was chosen for her dedication as an educator and recreation therapist.
“This honor was sincerely unexpected,” said Kaninska. “I am grateful that my colleagues from the community nominated me for this award.”
A graduate of both the National Music Academy in Ukraine and the Brooklyn College Conservatory, Kaninska holds degrees in Musical Arts and Recreational Education. A multifaceted vocalist, her musical training has formed the foundation of a career that spans opera, Broadway, folk and chamber works, with standout performances on stages across New York City, including appearances at Carnegie Hall.

Veronica Kaninska is joined by friends and SJNY colleagues at the award ceremony.
For more than 24 years, Kaninska has served as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist and director of therapeutic recreation, leading community engagement in long-term care and rehabilitation facilities. Puppetry is also an integral part of her work, combining puppets into therapy, education and multicultural performance projects, blending art and healing.
At SJNY, Kaninska mentors the next generation of recreation professionals. Her classroom embodies her belief that music, art and creativity are not just aesthetic practices but powerful tools for healing, connection and social good. She assists her students with starting their own community engagement and participating in community outreach through campus events and volunteer opportunities.
“I enjoy teaching and think it is essential to stay connected to the field as we grow a new generation of therapists,” said Kaninska. “I met a few attendees at the Power List event who were proud St. Joseph’s alumni. It was amazing to see that St. Joseph’s has become an integral part of their identity.”
Outside of her professional life, Kaninska finds joy in hobbies, which she describes as serious leisure activities. These include performing vocal music, gardening, and various arts and crafts. She also enjoys strolling through the city and visiting museums with friends, activities that continue to inspire her creativity and bring balance to her life.
Kaninska also performed in piano recitals with SJNY President Donald R. Boomgaarden.
