St. Joseph’s University, New York’s Long Island Campus is kicking off Super Bowl season with its annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive.
For the last 35 years, Tackle Hunger has hosted Souper Bowl of Caring in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl that supports local food pantries.
SJNY’s Campus Ministry, in partnership with the Law and Justice Society, BSN Nursing Club, Theta Phi Alpha, Accounting and Business Society, and Biology Club are collecting food for local food pantries through February 12th.
“Many food pantries experience a shortage of food after the influx of clients for the holidays, so it is important that we can help support their initiatives during this time of year, especially with the harsh winter we have been having,” said Jonathan Galo, Director of Campus Ministry on the Long Island Campus.
Service & Responsibility at SJNY
In line with the University’s service and social responsibility pillars, students are able to learn about the needs of our local communities.
“We read in scripture, ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink’ (Mt. 25:35). As a school in the Catholic tradition, founded on the values given to us by the Gospels and by the lasting legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph, it is imperative that we continue to provide food for those in need. We have a duty to help those around us, and this food drive is just one way that we can embrace that call to serve and love others,” Gallo continued.

Donation boxes can be found in buildings throughout campus.
The drive is a yearly event within the Office of Campus Ministry to help remind students of their responsibility to support those who are in need.
“It is my hope that by holding this food drive, we can further increase awareness in our own SJNY community of the challenges that others might face due to food insecurity. This is a simple act for students to participate in that can leave a lasting impression on the livelihood of others. Sometimes the smallest acts can have some of the biggest meaning in people’s lives,” said Gallo.
Donation boxes can be found in every building on campus until February 12th. To learn more about the Souper Bowl of Caring initiative, click here.
