Throughout October, students and organizations across St. Joseph’s University, New York recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month through a series of events held on its Long Island and Brooklyn campuses. Each event aimed to educate, inspire and support those affected by breast cancer while strengthening community awareness and compassion.
Brooklyn Campus Events
The Office of Student Involvement offered Breast Cancer Awareness Cards, an ongoing initiative that encouraged students to write handwritten cards filled with messages of support for those currently battling breast cancer. These heartfelt notes were later shared with patients, spreading hope and kindness across the community.
On October 16, Health Services hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness event outside Tuohy Hall Auditorium during common hour. Students and faculty wore pink in solidarity, and informational tables were set up to learn more about prevention, early detection and available resources.
The following week on October 23, students gathered for Pop for Pink. Participants chose pink balloons to pop, revealing either a fact about breast cancer or a special prize inside. All proceeds were donated directly to breast cancer support organizations.
October 26 saw the SJNY community participate in the Coney Island Breast Cancer Walk. The event united students, faculty and community members in honor of survivors and those lost to the disease.
Closing out the month, the Beta Upsilon Delta sorority hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Table outside Tuohy Hall Auditorium on October 29. The group distributed pins, stickers and informational pamphlets to promote awareness and education.
Long Island Campus Events
On October 23, the Pre-Health Club hosted Breast Cancer Awareness Mini Games in O’Connor Hall centered around movies, songs and general knowledge. The games created a lively environment while spreading awareness about the importance of early detection and support.
The following week, on October 29, the BSN Club held a Breast Cancer Education Workshop in the McGann Conference Center. Partnering with the Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education, the workshop explored the intersection of breast cancer and nursing care. Guest speaker, Eileen Pillitteri, discussed risk factors, testing methods and techniques for self-examination and patient awareness. Students enjoyed free food and giveaways while engaging in an important dialogue about health education and advocacy.
Athletics’ Support
In addition to these events, the women’s volleyball team on both the Brooklyn and Long Island campuses showed their support by dressing in pink uniforms during games held throughout October.
