The Office of Global Studies at St. Joseph’s University, New York is pleased to announce that it will be offering a new study abroad opportunity in Ireland for students on the Long Island Campus. Taking place Jan. 7 – 15, 2027, the trip will allow students of all disciplines to become fully immersed in the country’s rich culture and history.
A Trip to the Emerald Isle
The nine-day trip through Ireland will revolve around students touring its most storied cities and towns such as Dublin, Galway and Athlone, as well as trekking across the country’s windswept coastlines and visiting its historic landmarks. As with all SJNY-hosted study aboard trips, many of the expenses involved will be covered in the price including airfare and most group activities.
SJNY’s Ireland study abroad trip was made possible by Anne Fitzgerald, the former treasurer of the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City, who donated $5,000 to get the program started. The one-time donation will be divided into five $1,000 stipends for eligible students embarking on the trip.
“Though not affiliated with St. Joseph’s University, New York, Anne and the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City welcomed us with open arms and truly became part of our SJNY extended family. Their generosity will have a lasting impact on our students and their global journeys,” said Lisa Galasso-Werner ’08, MS, MBA ’13, director of Development & Consortium Giving at SJNY.
Those interested in participating will be required to apply, along with writing a letter as to why they are excited about traveling to Ireland and what they are hoping to receive from the experience. All applications will then be reviewed by a scholarship committee to determine who be awarded stipends to attend.
“Taking students on a cultural tour of Ireland isn’t just a field trip, it’s an adventure into living history, vibrant traditions, and the chance to dive deeper into a culture we think we know,” said Lena Grasso ’22, Assistant Director for the Office of Global Studies at SJNY. “I’m beyond excited to watch students’ curiosity spark into inspiration as they experience the heart, soul and spirit of Ireland firsthand.”
The Complete Study Abroad Experience
As for the trip’s itinerary, students will partake in a variety of activities spanning the country. Some include a tour of the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Trinity College, the Book of Kells and the National Museum of Ireland. Those on the trip will also explore Ireland’s more scenic locations such as the majestic Cliffs of Moher and Blarney Castle and Gardens in the town of Cork. During one evening students will find themselves dining at Bunratty Castle for an authentic medieval banquet.
For students interested in learning more about this first-time opportunity, the Office of Global Studies will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration promoting the trip on March 12 in the Student Center’s Multipurpose Room. For more details on the upcoming study abroad experience, click here.
